If you live in or visit the New York City area and care about sustainable food, then the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture should be on your agenda. Located in the European-style former dairy barns on the Westchester County estate of the wealthy Rockefeller family — and surrounded by 80 acres of organic farmland — Stone Barns is a major nexus for research and education about sustainable food systems.
The site is also home to Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a top-tier restaurant whose executive chef, Dan Barber, is known nationally as an advocate for the sustainable food movement. He and his brother David, who co-own the restaurant, are on the Stone Barns Center board of directors.
The center welcomes visitors. To whet your appetite, please enjoy this slide show of photos from a recent stop at Stone Barns. Good Food on Every Table later this week will publish a profile/q-and-a feature on Fred Kirschenmann — a longtime organic farmer, academic, and leading intellectual light of the Good Food movement — who is president of the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture.
